The Legend of Lake Toba
Long ago, in a fertile valley in North Sumatra, lived a young man named Toba. He was a hardworking farmer who lived a simple, solitary life. One afternoon, Toba went fishing at the river, hoping for a good meal. After hours of waiting, he finally caught a massive, dazzling golden fish.
To his utter amazement, as soon as he brought the fish home, it transformed into a beautiful woman. She explained that she was under a spell and thanked Toba for breaking it. Toba, struck by her beauty, asked her to marry him.
The woman agreed, but on one strict condition: Toba must never tell anyone, especially their future children, that she was once a fish. If the secret were ever revealed, a great disaster would fall upon the land. Toba gave his word, and they lived happily for several years, eventually having a son named Samosir.
Samosir grew up to be a bit lazy and very hungry. One day, his mother asked him to bring lunch to Toba in the fields. On the way, Samosir's hunger got the better of him, and he ate most of his father's food.
When he reached the field, Toba opened the basket to find only scraps. Tired and starving, Toba lost his temper. He shouted at the boy, "You son of a fish!"
As soon as the words left his lips, the sky turned dark. Toba realized his mistake instantly, but it was too late. The earth began to shake, and massive amounts of water started gushing out of the ground.
The mother told Samosir to run to the highest hill. She then disappeared, transforming back into a fish. The rain poured down until the entire valley was submerged, creating a massive lake. Toba was swept away by the rising tides.
Today, that lake is known as Lake Toba, and the large island in the middle is called Samosir Island, named after the son who survived the flood.
