Learning Guide Unit 9 ENGL0101

Learning Guide Unit 9

Final Exam Overview

The Final Exam period lasts four days during Week/Unit 9. It begins on Thursday at 12:05 AM UoPeople time (GMT -5) and ends Sunday at 11:55 PM, UoPeople time (GMT -5). You are responsible for being aware of the official UoPeople clock (located in the upper left-hand corner of every course), and accounting for your local time zone or +1/-1 hour discrepancies due to Daylight Saving Time.

During this four-day access period, you may choose to begin any Final Exam, for any course, at any time. However, it is highly recommended that you attempt all of your exams as early as possible, and not leave them for the last few hours of the access period. Starting your exams early will adequately allow for any communication or technical support, if needed.

Once you begin taking a Final Exam, you will be allowed only one attempt and there will be a time limit of 80 minutes. The exam clock cannot be paused while the exam is in progress. Therefore, it is important that you be in an environment free from disturbance or interruption, and that you complete any errands or other necessary actions before beginning an exam. It is also important to note that if you exceed the time limit given for the exam, you will be automatically locked out of the exam and assigned a grade of zero. It is for this reason that you should try your utmost to finish the exam on time, and just to be on the safe side, you should plan to finish your exam several minutes prior to the timed deadline. Please also note that if you are taking this exam for the second time, you will need to use an alternative email address in order to access the exam. If you try to use the same email address that you used for the first exam attempt, you will be unable to proceed to the exam.

Please note - since there is plenty of time and opportunity allotted over the course of four days for resolving both technical and non-technical issues, there will be no make-up exams allowed.

The Final Exam is administered entirely online and is a fully computer-graded activity. The link to the placement portal will appear after you start the quiz in Moodle. There is no need to click Finish attempt in Moodle after you take the exam in the placement platform, it will self-submit at the end of the period with no marks recorded in Moodle. The exam itself does not take place in Moodle, so the exam grade will appear in the gradebook by the end of Week/Unit 9, and final course grades will appear in the gradebook by the following week. There is no need to contact your Program Advisor after taking the exam to ask if you submitted successfully. If you reached the end of the exam after around 40-43 questions, before running out of time and the window of the exam closed, you can be certain that you have submitted successfully.

*An important note on the importance of this course and the final exam: Because English language proficiency is such an essential skill for succeeding at University of the People, students must earn a score of at least 50 on the final examination. A normalized score of less than 50 on the final examination will be an automatic failure for the course. Therefore, if you achieve a normalized score less than a 50 on your final exam, your final grade reverts to a 0. Students who fail the exam and thus the course are also entitled to take the course a second time.

Students who earn a normalized score of 50 or higher on the final examination will have that score added to the rest of the grades they have earned in the course, and a final grade for the course will be computed. If your final grade for the course is less than a 73, your application to be a degree seeking student cannot be reactivated because you are not yet able to demonstrate English language proficiency.

In addition to the above, please note the Final Exam will be a general English exam and not necessarily the items covered in class.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding the Final Exam, please be sure to contact your program advisor as soon as possible.

Proctored Exam

The Final Exam for this course must be done under the supervision of a proctor. Since you already secured your proctor before registering for this course, this is a reminder that you should coordinate with him/her before you take the exam. Please note, you will not be permitted to change proctors during the course. As a reminder, students are required to successfully complete proctored exams spaced throughout their program of study at UoPeople, in order to verify the student’s identity in confirming a degree and diploma upon graduation.

No use of course materials is allowed, including the internet and non-electronic sources.
